Shooting the M Cushion was a lot of fun. I spent many seasons branding Fashion Week in NY, LA, and Miami but it has been a while since I found myself up front and personal with an all-frills fashion shoot at the 24th Street Loft in Chelsea.
It was also a great opportunity to discover some of the unique sense of style that the FM team hides while creating amazing (albeit not as fashionable) communications for surveillance software and dog television brands OnSSI and DogTV. Turns out that Micha's love affair with Italian soccer and Hsin's meticulous Taiwanese taste have transformed this shoot into a treasure trove of images and lifestyle statements for M Cushion.
Ashley Sherrill of True Model was the perfect talent for the job and has cooperated (in exchange for periodic M Cushion massage breaks) with our outrageous directions which included at some point wearing a $1000 gown and perfect hair and makeup by Christian Zamora and sprawling on the floor amid fluffy cushions. Marshall Troy who helped us with an earlier shoot for Shop Japan has made the whole thing happen with a fantastic team which also included the resourceful and stylish Grace Knott and the fashion genius of Paul Petzy.
The tenth annual New York Art Book Fair at MoMA PS1 in Long Island City, Queens was this past weekend, and it was definitely an inspiring event.
The event featured almost 400 booksellers and artists from 28 countries. The works sold at the event represent everything from the most innovative and affordable book designs, to out of print antiques, to indie published zines.
Room after room are filled with vendors showcasing their wares and its pretty easy to get lost in all that stimuli.
One work in particular that caught my eye was Lorenzo Vitturi’s photobook, Dalston Anatomy. The book contains a series of photos of sculptures and collages made from found objects from London’s Ridley Road Market.
Vitturi used vivid and colorful debris from the market to make his works and paired them alongside photos of a day at the market to chronicle a way of life that could be fleeting. Votturi fears Ridley Road Market may soon fall victim to an ever-encroaching gentrification in East London, that would disperse this rich source of African, Caribbean, and Asian cultures.
He uses the same resourceful spirit in his gorgeous, tactile cover design. Each edition of the book is unique in that they are wrapped in a colorful vlisco textile from the market. Using these beautiful textiles as bookcloth allows for each edition to be unique and is definitely what initially drew me to this book.
My words of wisdom, come prepared, bring your totes. Not only will you blend in with the other canvas-carrying print enthusiasts, but you’ll have something to hold all your treasures in.
NYABF is where art, books, and social political context collide and its awesome/overwhelming to be surrounded by so many inspiring works and have the chance to support artists in their endeavors.
